Aadhaar Authentication for Tatkal:
Starting July 1, 2025, passengers will only be able to book Tatkal railway tickets if they have verified their Aadhaar details. The Ministry of Railways announced this new rule to reduce misuse by agents and ensure real passengers benefit from the Tatkal scheme.
According to a circular issued on June 10, Aadhaar-authenticated users can book Tatkal tickets through the IRCTC website or app starting from July 1. From July 15, Aadhaar-based OTP (one-time password) verification will also become compulsory for these bookings.
This rule won’t just apply to online bookings. Even if you’re buying Tatkal tickets at railway counters or through authorized agents, you must provide your mobile number for OTP verification, which the system will use to confirm your identity during booking.
Also, agents will no longer be allowed to book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes after bookings open. This means no ticket bookings by agents between 10 AM and 10:30 AM for AC classes, and from 11 AM to 11:30 AM for non-AC classes.
The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and IRCTC are working together to update the systems and inform all zonal railways about these changes.
Railways data shows that people book about 2.25 lakh Tatkal tickets online every day. Passengers reserve many of these within the first few minutes, raising concerns about agents using automated tools. The new Aadhaar rule is a step to stop this and ensure transparency in the ticket booking process.
A senior Railway Ministry official mentioned this move is part of a larger effort to curb the misuse of technology in ticket bookings.
