Mumbai Police Shuts Auto Driver’s 8 Lakh Business After Viral Post

Auto Driver’s 8 Lakh Business: An autorickshaw driver in Mumbai, who recently went viral for earning ₹5 to ₹8 lakh per month through a smart side hustle, has now found himself in trouble with the police.

Viral LinkedIn Story:
The story first came to light when Rahul Rupani, a product leader at Lenskart, shared the driver’s entrepreneurial journey on LinkedIn. The post quickly gained attention for showcasing out-of-the-box thinking and ground-level innovation.

Stationed near the US Consulate in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), the driver identified a unique gap. Visa applicants visiting the consulate in large numbers each day are not allowed to carry bags inside. With no official storage facility nearby, many faced inconvenience. Seizing the opportunity, the driver began offering a paid bag-storage service from his rickshaw.

Smart Business Model:
According to the viral post, the driver catered to 20–30 customers daily, charging for each bag stored in his auto. By providing a simple yet essential service, he reportedly earned ₹20,000 to ₹30,000 every day, translating to a monthly income of ₹5 to ₹8 lakh. People online praised his street-smart business model and admired how he solved a real problem with a low-cost, high-impact solution.

Police Investigation:
However, the viral fame soon drew the attention of the Mumbai Police. Authorities questioned the legality of operating an unregistered storage business on public premises. After an investigation, police officials intervened and shut down the service, citing security concerns and a lack of official permissions.

While the driver’s ingenuity sparked admiration, the lack of formal licensing ultimately led to the shutdown of his operations.

A Lesson in Street Smarts:

This incident highlights the delicate balance between entrepreneurship and regulation. The auto driver’s story serves as both an inspiration and a cautionary tale, proving that while innovative ideas can take off quickly, navigating legal frameworks remains crucial for long-term success.
