Chennai Metro: The collapse of a major section of the metro railway track under construction in the Tamil Nadu capital Chennai has now become a hot topic of discussion. One person died in the accident that occurred at around 9 pm on Wednesday. The incident took place near the residential area of Valasaravakkam in the western part of Chennai. Police officials present at the scene revealed that a huge concrete beam collapsed on the road as part of the construction work of the Chennai Metro Rail project. Rescue operations were immediately launched, it was explained.
The accident took place near the DLF IT SEZ and L&T Construction Campus in the Nandambakkam area, on the busy Mount-Poonamalli Road corridor. The incident took place on the route of the metro line connecting Poonamalli to Porur via Nandambakkam. Metro beam is usually made of concrete or steel parallel to the ground in the construction of elevated metro rail tracks. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) issued a statement on the incident on Wednesday night.
CMRL officials confirmed that two I-girders installed a week ago near the main gate of Larsen and Toubro (L&T) headquarters in Manappakkam collapsed after one of their supporting A-frames slipped. In this context, Chennai Metro Rail Limited, along with contractors, has taken action on a war footing to remove the debris from the accident site. At the same time, an investigation has been launched into the incident to determine the exact cause of the collapse of the concrete beam, the statement said.
One person has died in the accident, Metro Rail officials said. A thorough investigation will be conducted into the incident, the statement said. The deceased was trapped under the debris when the girders collapsed and died on the spot, it was revealed. They said that steps have been taken to identify the deceased. Another incident related to the construction of the Chennai Metro took place recently. Last month, the balcony of a multi-storey residential building in the Nochikuppam area near Marina Beach suddenly collapsed. However, some locals alleged that the tremors caused by the construction of the Chennai Metro nearby were the reason for the incident.
