Operation Rising Lion: On June 13, 2025, Israel launched a daring and massive military strike against Iran, code-named Operation Rising Lion. The operation took place just before sunrise, fusing drone warfare, cyber-interference, and airborne bombardment to hit Iran’s nuclear and defense infrastructure. It was one of the most sophisticated and organized actions by Israel in recent times.
The operation was initiated by a wave of small, unmanned drones from within Iranian borders. Those drones, potentially flown with assistance from Mossad units, disabled radar networks and essential defense nodes. This opening act of tactics enabled more than 200 Israeli fighter jets to penetrate Iranian air space with minimal opposition. Their targets were missile silos, communications hubs, nuclear facilities, and command centers, all struck in quick succession.
Among the top targets were Iran’s top military and nuclear commanders. Reports indicate that top leaders, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) high-ranking commanders, were among the dead. The strikes were intended to shatter Iran’s leadership and curtail its power to strike back in the immediate short term.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu labeled the operation as a “defensive necessity”, stating that it was carried out to halt Iran’s fast-paced nuclear drive and avoid future war. The title “Rising Lion” represents power and watchfulness, depicting Israel’s determination to maintain regional security through bold action. He cautioned that the operation can be prolonged if necessary.
Retaliating, Iran sent more than 100 drones into Israeli airspace. Few got through, but the action increased tensions throughout the Middle East. Air travel was diverted, stock markets fluctuated, and speculations about wider conflict ensued. Civilians on both sides were cautioned to stay vigilant in the rapidly changing climate.
Operation Rising Lion illustrated a new type of warfare—where human intelligence, stealth technology, and cyber-electronic attacks come together. Military strategists think the operation has the potential to be a case study in modern strategic warfare, where taking out command systems and defences can reconfigure the outcome without extended fighting.
