Licence to Lead: Blaise Metreweli Becomes MI6’s First Female Chief

In a landmark moment for British intelligence, Blaise Metreweli has been named the first female chief of MI6, officially, known as the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service. Since MI6 was founded in 1909, no woman has led the agency, until now.

Often portrayed in James Bond films as “M,” the MI6 chief is the powerful figure who directs Britain’s overseas intelligence efforts. With this appointment, Metreweli becomes the real-world version of that iconic role.

UK Prime Minister Calls Appointment “Historic”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer described Metreweli’s promotion as a historic and timely move. “Britain faces global threats that are increasingly digital, complex, and dangerous,” he said. “Strong leadership is critical.”

Metreweli, 47, joined MI6 in 1999 and currently heads its technology and innovation division—internally nicknamed “Q.” She has also held senior roles in MI5, the domestic intelligence agency, giving her a rare dual-agency background.

Modernising MI6 for a Digital Future

Metreweli’s appointment reflects a broader shift within the UK intelligence community. Her experience in cybersecurity, AI, and digital espionage shows MI6’s growing focus on modern threats. While she won’t hand gadgets to tuxedoed spies, she will serve as the strategic head of MI6, reporting directly to Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

“This is more than a symbolic appointment,” said a senior security analyst. “It signals MI6’s commitment to innovation and inclusion.”

More Than Symbolic: A Cultural Shift

Her rise also marks a cultural shift in Britain’s intelligence world—long dominated by tradition and secrecy. As MI6 evolves, experts believe more diverse leadership will strengthen the agency’s ability to adapt, recruit top talent, and meet new challenges in global intelligence.

“I am proud and honoured to lead the organisation at such a pivotal time,” Metreweli told the BBC.

While James Bond remains fiction, this new “M” is real—and ready to lead Britain’s fight against 21st-century threats
