5 Essential Monsoon Skincare Tips by Dermatologists

Monsoon season is welcome relief from the blistering summer heat, but it also brings in its wake a new bunch of skin problems. There is higher humidity, more sweating, fungal infection, and pollution, which can play havoc with your skin health if not kept under control.

5 Essential Monsoon Skincare Tips:

1. Wash Twice Daily to Remove Excess Oil and Dirt
As per dermatologists, monsoon’s high humidity makes your skin release more oil, causing clogged pores and pimples.
Use a mild, sulfate-free cleanser twice a day to wash away dirt, sebum, and pollutants without stripping your skin of natural oils. Salicylic acid or tea tree oil-based cleansers can be used for oily skin.

2. Don’t Skip Moisturizer — Just Switch to a Lighter Formula
Most people skip moisturiser in monsoons under the impression that their skin becomes greasy. Skipping moisturiser, however, can actually lead to overcompensation by the skin to produce more oil.
Experts recommend a switch to a light, gel-like or water-based moisturizer that moisturizes without clogging pores.

3. Apply Sunscreen Even on Rainy Days
UV rays can pass through clouds and hurt your skin anyway. Dermatologists suggest a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or more even on rainy days. For oily skin, use matte-finish or gel-based sunscreens.

4. Exfoliate Delicately — But Not Too Often
Exfoliation also removes dead skin cells and unclogs pores, which are prevalent during monsoon. Exfoliate too much, and the skin barrier gets disrupted.
Exfoliate only once or twice a week with gentle exfoliants such as lactic acid, mandelic acid, or natural fruit enzyme-based scrubs.

5. Be Careful of Fungal Infections
Moist skin provides a fertile ground for fungi, particularly in skin folds such as underarms, feet, and inner thighs. Dermatologists advise:
Keeping skin folds dry

Employing antifungal creams or powders

Wearing loose cotton garments

Removing wet garments promptly

In cases where infections linger, meet a dermatologist who can prescribe.
