Mental Health Crisis Gen Z: Gen Z, the individuals born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, is coming of age in an ocean of opportunities on the one hand and record levels of anxiety, stress, and depression on the other. There are repetitive reports and surveys coming from all over the world which reflect consistently an alarming trend of growing mental health in Gen Z. There is a need to examine the reasons and move towards sane solutions to help this generation.


What’s Fueling the Mental Health Emergency?

Digital Overload

Gen Z is the first generation ever to live their whole life with digital technology all around them. It is bombarded with information and communication, but even with it come endless screen time, social media comparison, and cyberbullying that arrived on the scene and have contributed significantly to exacerbating mental health.


Academic and Career Stress

With hard-hat competition, uncertain job opportunities, and through-the-roof education expenses, Gen Z is at a dilemma to excel at an early age. The threat of failure or low performance translates into anxiety and burnout.

Loneliness and Isolation

Ironically, in a hyper-connected world, most Gen Z youth are lonely. The pandemic, speeding up the problem, with long lockdowns reducing face-to-face interaction and heightened solitude.

Social and Environmental Issues

Climate change, political unrest, social movements for justice, and economic disparities influence Gen Z’s lives worldwide. Endless exposure to negative news may breed hopelessness and chronic stress.

Solutions: Fostering Gen Z’s Mental Welfare

Fostering healthy online habits—such as reducing screen time, silencing toxic accounts, and taking action in real life—can alleviate mental stress.

Open Conversation and Therapy Access

Deconstruction of mental illness stigma and creating open communication at school, at work, and at home can create sanctuary. Expanding access to low-cost therapy and college counseling must be achieved.
