Public Holiday on 7th July 2025:
Muharram is one of the most important and sacred months in the Islamic calendar. In 2025, Muharram may be observed on either July 6 or 7, depending on the sighting of the moon. Although the official holiday date is July 6, if the crescent moon is not sighted, the Islamic month could extend by a day. This makes July 7 a possible date for the public holiday in many parts of India.
If the holiday falls on July 7, all schools, colleges, banks, post offices, government offices, and several private institutions will remain closed across the country. Additionally, trading at major stock exchanges such as the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will also be suspended for the day. This is because Muharram is recognized as a gazetted holiday in India.
Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. It is one of the four sacred months in Islam where warfare and fighting are traditionally forbidden. For many Muslims, especially those belonging to the Shia community, this month carries deep spiritual significance. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, is observed with sorrow and mourning. It commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in the Battle of Karbala.
On the public holiday, many people participate in processions and religious gatherings to pay tribute to the sacrifices made during Muharram. It is a time of reflection, prayer, and community remembrance.
As a result, July 7, 2025, could see nationwide closures in honor of Muharram, subject to the lunar sighting confirmation.
