Case Filed against Indigo Officials: A serious allegation has been levied by IndiGo. India’s largest private airline, after a case was filed by a trainee worker against senior officials on charges of harassment based on caste. The case has attracted huge media attention, and questions over inclusiveness and equality in corporate India are being posed.
The trainee, who was discovered to belong to a Scheduled Caste (SC) category. Reported that he was constantly humiliated and psychologically intimidated by some of the senior staff during his training. The harassment, as reflected in his grievance, was not just of the nature of careless remarks but also differential treatment based on his caste status.
Transfixed with horror and emotionally shaken, the trainee was absent for a couple of hours. The absence was triggered by a report of his family member as missing and a subsequent police probe which unearthed the horrific charges.
In pursuit of the FIR lodged by the trainee. Police lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The FIR is a handful of high-ranking officials with accusations of harassment of caste nature. That would have severe legal consequence if the allegations are proved.
Police officials are now probing the case themselves. They are collecting statements from the rest of the trainees and examining internal training school records to verify charges.
Responding in contrast to the above, IndiGo issued an official statement accepting the grievance and promising their full cooperation for the inquiry. The company also initiated an internal investigation to follow up on the case on their own. The company reaffirmed the safety of a harassment-free environment, reiterating its zero-tolerance policy towards caste-based or any form of harassment.
This case has also created bigger debates regarding casteism at the Indian workplace, especially within upscale sectors like aviation. Experts feel such cases indicate better HR practices, sensitivity towards being inclusive, and fair grievance redressal systems.
