The Hidden Risks of Night Shifts for Women – Study Sheds Light

Night Shifts for Women: There are many women working the night shift today. Working the night shift can cause a number of health problems. Women who work the night shift are more likely to develop asthma, a study has found. This is according to a study published in ERJ Open Research on June 16.

Women who regularly work the night shift were found to be 50% more likely to have moderate or severe asthma than women who work the day shift. This may be due to disruptions in the body’s natural clock. This may affect hormone levels, researchers at the University of Manchester in the UK said.

A key finding supports the idea that hormones play a role. The study also found that postmenopausal women who worked the night shift and were not using hormone replacement therapy (HRT) were twice as likely to develop asthma.

The researchers noted that asthma affects women more than men, which increases hospitalization and mortality rates in women. Previous studies have linked night shift work to more severe asthma in general.

The study tracked the health of nearly 275,000 workers in the U.K. Biobank. More than 5% of these workers had asthma, and 2% had severe asthma requiring a rescue inhaler.

The study found that women who worked exclusively on night shifts were 50% more likely to have moderate or severe asthma. The researchers also found that women who worked night shifts after menopause were 89% more likely to have asthma.

Higher testosterone levels in men may protect them from asthma, as testosterone has been linked to protection against asthma, the study found.
