Following a near-serious in-flight accident of one of its Air India Express aircraft. The airline firm has directed a complete audit of all its aircraft fleet. The move has been made after a Delhi-Pune flight made an emergency landing in Ahmedabad on June 20, 2025. When it experienced a failure of one of its hydraulic systems. On June 20, Air India Express flight IX-2572, which was flown by a Boeing 737 aircraft, experienced a hydraulic system malfunction moments after takeoff. The flight carrying more than 180 passengers made an emergency diversion to Ahmedabad for landing. Panic and breakdown of crew communication after the incident was experienced by the passengers. Even though the crew managed to land the plane safely without any injuries.
On 12th June 2025, Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner taking off from Ahmedabad for London, crashed 36 seconds from departure, hitting the hostel and mess building of B.J. Medical College. Out of 242 individuals on board, 241 died, 39+ on ground also lost their lives; only one passenger remained alive. The force brought about enormous structural damage at the time students were taking their lunch, with tables, rubble, and jet fuel smoke covering the ground. Surviving medicos assisted in evacuating injured classmates, but the disaster turned into India’s worst aviation disaster in a decade
The incident triggered serious doubts regarding flight maintenance and response practices at the airline, and media and regulatory scrutiny ensued in record numbers.
Responding to this, Air India has asked for a comprehensive technical audit of all its fleet on all Air India and Air India Express operations. The audit will determine the status of hydraulic systems, electrical units, and the maintenance work being done.
Apart from this, a high-level safety review board has been established to oversee day-to-day activities, review crew performance, and implement SOPs. This board would be answerable to Air India’s CEO and would coordinate with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
DGCA Involvement and Regulatory Oversight
The DGCA has ordered an internal inquiry into the accident and asked for a detailed technical report from the airline. This could also be followed by disciplinary action or operational directives if systemic failures are identified.
