Toll tax on two-wheelers:
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari also came forward to support the NHAI’s statement. He posted a message on social media saying that no proposal to charge toll on two-wheelers exists. He strongly criticized some media outlets for spreading false and misleading news without checking the facts. Gadkari stated that two-wheeler users will continue to enjoy full exemption from toll charges and described the spreading of such rumours as irresponsible journalism.
FASTag-Based Annual Toll Pass Introduced
In a separate initiative, the government plans to launch a FASTag-based Annual Pass system starting from August 15, 2025. This scheme will help regular highway users save both time and money. For a fixed fee of ₹3,000 per year, commuters can access over 200 toll plazas on national highways without stopping. Earlier, regular travelers spent nearly ₹10,000 annually on tolls. This new system is expected to bring down the average cost per toll crossing to ₹15 saving users up to ₹7,000 each year.
New Barrier-less Toll Collection System
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is also introducing an ANPR-FASTag-based barrier-less tolling system. This technology combines Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and RFID-based FASTags to allow smooth passage without stopping at toll plazas. If any vehicle fails to pay, electronic notices (e-Notices) will be sent, and penalties may include FASTag suspension and action via the VAHAN portal. NHAI is currently accepting bids to roll out this system in select locations, and its wider implementation will depend on user experience and system performance.
So two wheeler owners need not worry. No toll charges are planned for them, and the government is working towards making highway travel more affordable and efficient for all.
