Indian Railways, the world’s fourth-largest rail network is getting ready for a major upgrade. Its current train control system is over 100 years old. Recent train accidents have shown that the old system has many problems. To improve safety and performance, the Indian Railways Board is planning to bring in new technology.

According to the Economic Times, the board is working on a fresh plan to use modern technology for operations and traffic control. This upgrade will help reduce train accidents, increase train speeds, and make overall operations faster and smoother. Due to growing traffic on the railways, this step has become very important.

Special Focus Areas

A senior officer said that freight corridors, high-speed tracks, and mixed-traffic routes will get special attention. India will take inspiration from countries like Japan, Russia, Germany, Switzerland, France and Spain. However their systems cannot be directly copied because India’s railway needs are different. Any new system must suit the Indian environment.

What’s New in the System?

The new system will include an Integrated Command Center. This center will bring together all railway departments and sections to work as one team. Using better technology, they will handle train movement, route planning and emergency actions more effectively.

Currently, many tasks are done manually, which puts pressure on controllers. As train traffic increases, managing it manually has become very difficult. With new tech, the workload will reduce and efficiency will increase.

Why Now?

Recent accidents have highlighted the flaws in the old system. So, the Railway Board formed a committee to suggest improvements for better traffic control. This upgrade is expected to make train travel in India safer, faster and more reliable for everyone.
