Jimmy Boy Shut Down: Jimmy Boy, a beloved Parsi café near Horniman Circle in Mumbai’s Fort area, has shut down due to the unsafe condition of the Vikas Building, where it is housed. The closure comes just months before the iconic restaurant was set to celebrate its 100th anniversary in September. “We are a family restaurant founded on the values of ethnic customs, love for our family, and most importantly, wonderful food,” reads a message on Jimmy Boy’s official website. The Irani family has owned and operated the café since 1925, proudly preserving its legacy for nearly a century.
Jimmy Boy Shut Down:
Jimmy Boy, a popular Parsi café in Mumbai’s historic Fort neighborhood, abruptly shut its doors just weeks before it planned to celebrate 100 years in September. The owners originally launched it as Café India, then relaunched it in 1999 under the name Jimmy Boy. They built its reputation on Keema Pav, Brun Maska, Mava Cakes, and nostalgic Irani tea. Since day one, the café’s team has preserved traditional recipes without alteration. “We follow closely guarded, family-secret recipes. Every Parsi household has its version of these classics,” states the Jimmy Boy website. It names Patra ni Macchi as an all-time favorite, followed by Sauce Nimacchi, Salli Boti, Keema Pav, Chicken Berry Pulao, Dhansak, Dhun Dal, and Prawns Patia.
Sudden Evacuation – Unsafe Building:
On June 20, a junior engineer spotted significant fractures in the four-story Vikas Premises building, which houses Jimmy Boy, at Horniman Circle in Fort. He immediately alerted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) emergency management unit. The next morning, BMC officials issued an official notice under Section 354 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act and ordered an immediate evacuation. After investigators confirmed the building was unsafe for habitation, the BMC, fire department, and local police sealed off the area.

About a year ago, Mahimtura Consultants conducted a structural analysis and identified severe degradation in the load-bearing walls, beams, and slabs of the Vikas Building. They issued urgent remedial recommendations, but the authorities ignored them and took no corrective action. As a result, officials declared the building “extremely dilapidated” and ordered the closure of Jimmy Boy café at Horniman Circle in Fort. The compromised safety left the café’s management with no choice but to shut it down.
Jimmy Boy’s Takeaway Service:
Reports say Director of Operations Shehzad Irani tearfully bid farewell but assured everyone that Jimmy Boy isn’t going anywhere. The team continues to serve takeout from the Mahim location and delivers sandwiches, baked goods, and puffs to Café Olive Green in Navy Nagar. The brand has also expanded its online delivery network and actively reinforces its presence in Mumbai’s culinary scene.
