BH Number Plate: Nowadays, many vehicles are spotted with a number plate that begins with BH. This is one of the new initiatives by the Government of India, where the government is providing number plates which are Bharat (BH) Series. The main focus of initiating this is to make the vehicle registration easier and more flexible. But most of the people are wondering how it works with the regular number plates and who can get it? Let’s now check out all the details about the BH series number plate.
What Is a BH Number Plate?
In August 2021, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) introduced the BH series number plate. This number plate enables travelers to travel interstate seamlessly without any re-registration when the vehicle shifts from one state to another.
Who is Eligible For this?
This series of number plates mainly targets central and state government employees, defense personnel, and employees of private companies that have offices in at least four states or Union Territories. The goal is to eliminate the bureaucratic hassle of changing vehicle registration every time someone moves to a new state.

How Does It Differ from Regular Number Plates?
Regular number plates are state-specific. For example, a car registered in Delhi will carry a plate that starts with “DL,” and if the owner moves to Maharashtra, they must re-register the vehicle under the Maharashtra RTO, which is a lengthy and often tedious process involving road tax payment, NOC (No Objection Certificate), and verification.
The BH Series plate bypasses this completely. It uses a centralized registration system, and the number format looks like this:
“YY BH #### XX”, where “YY” is the year, “BH” stands for Bharat, “####” is a registered random number, and “XX” are vehicle model letters.
Benefits of the BH Series Number Plate:
Also, instead of paying road tax for 15 years upfront like in regular registrations, BH vehicle owners pay road tax every two years. This is especially useful for short-term postings or transfers. The BH number plate brings much-needed convenience and mobility for working professionals who move frequently. It cuts through red tape, saves time, and simplifies vehicle ownership across states. As more people become aware of its benefits, the BH Series may soon become the preferred choice for India’s mobile workforce.
