Did This Indian-Origin Entrepreneur Buy an Island for Startups?

Island for Startups in Singapore: Balaji Srinivasan, an Indian businessman, purchased an island close to Singapore and transformed it into a “country for startup founders and gym rats.” From the island, he operates “The Network School,” where tech enthusiasts can sign up for quarterly and annual courses. These programs offer access to seminars by tech industry luminaries, three meals a day, gym membership, and lodging (with a roommate).

Nick Peterson posted a preview of “The Network School” on Instagram. “We’re kind of testing what creating a new nation would feel like,” he says, referring to his experience as a resident student on the island. He claims that he worked out frequently at the gym, ate three wholesome meals a day, and took classes at the school on artificial intelligence and the future of technology.

Island for Startups:

Srinivasan is attempting to create the ideal setting to bring together a worldwide community of digital founders through the Network School. The school also provides office pods, Starlink, and fast Wi-Fi for individuals wishing to work remotely on the island. Below, you can see the results of the first three-month program with techies from around the globe.

According to Srinivasan’s post, the initial three-month program went remarkably well. “We received over 4,000 applications from more than 80 countries for just 128 spots. This clearly demonstrates the demand for our startup society vision worldwide,” he said. The members came from diverse tech backgrounds, including robotics, AI, genomics, and more. Notable speakers during the program included Bryan Johnson (creator of Don’t Die and Blueprint), Vitalik Buterin (Ethereum founder), and Ryan Peterson (Flexport founder).

The Network School currently enrolls 256 students in its year-long program. “We aim to discover hidden talent,” said Srinivasan. “Our focus is on individuals who pursue both personal and collective growth, those who believe in building win-and-help-win societies. From digital nomads and online creators to event planners, personal trainers, remote professionals, and technologists, we welcome talent from all walks of life. We’re particularly excited about people eager to burn calories, dive into tech, earn cryptocurrency, and thrive in our vibrant young community.”

With Miami, Tokyo, and Dubai on his vision board, Srinivasan aims to take the Network School global. The platform has already opened online applications and continues to attract future-ready learners. Backed by deep industry experience, Srinivasan previously served as a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz, held the CTO position at Coinbase, and co-founded the genetics startup Counsyl.
