India’s Costliest Film: Indian filmmakers have long moved past treating ₹50 crore as a substantial film budget. Today, even films made for OTT platforms often cost twice as much. The country’s biggest productions are steadily matching Hollywood blockbusters in both scale and spending. Now, as the team behind India’s first-ever $100 million film nears the final stages of production, the industry is preparing to rewrite the record books. This years-in-the-making cinematic spectacle is all set to claim the title of India’s most expensive film ever.

India’s Costliest Film Ramayana:

Director Nitesh Tiwari is set to break the record for India’s most expensive film with his ambitious adaptation of Ramayana. The film will release in two parts, and the team has already completed filming for Ramayana Part 1, which has now moved into post-production. According to a 2024 report by Bollywood Hungama, the film carries a staggering budget of $100 million (approximately ₹835 crore), the highest in Indian cinema history. This massive budget surpasses that of other big-budget films like Kalki 2898 AD (₹600 crore), RRR, and Adipurush (both at ₹550 crore). Even Brahmastra Part One, previously the most expensive Bollywood film with a ₹375 crore budget, falls short in comparison.

Namit Malhotra, owner of Prime Focus, is producing Ramayana Part 1. Prime Focus stands as the world’s largest independent integrated media services company. Namit also leads DNEG, the British-Indian visual effects giant responsible for the film’s VFX. DNEG, which has won eight Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects, brings its world-class expertise to the project, raising expectations for a visual spectacle. With a record-breaking budget, a high-profile production team, and an Oscar-winning VFX studio on board, Ramayana is poised to become a landmark moment in Indian cinema.

Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana:

Nitesh Tiwari draws inspiration from Valmiki’s epic to bring the two-part film Ramayana to life. Ranbir Kapoor takes on the role of Lord Rama, while Sai Pallavi portrays Sita and Yash steps into the role of Ravana. The film also features a star-studded supporting cast, including Vivek Oberoi, Rakul Preet Singh, Lara Dutta, Kajal Aggarwal, Ravi Dubey, Kunal Kapoor, Arun Govil, Sheeba Chadha, and Indira Krishnan.

The makers will unveil the first look of the film on July 3, offering fans a glimpse of the much-anticipated epic. The team plans to release the film during Diwali 2026, aiming to deliver a grand cinematic spectacle rooted in Indian mythology.
