1. United States

In many states in the USA, Indian driving licenses are accepted for validity periods of up to one year. While not all states do this, famous getaways such as California, Texas, and New York allow such temporary visitors to drive on Indian licenses, especially if the said licenses are in English. Carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) along is highly suggested.


2. United Kingdom

In the UK, Indian license holders may drive for a period of twelve months from the day of their arrival. The type of vehicle must match that which is described in the license; besides that, it must be in English or be accompanied by an IDP.

3. Australia

Driving with a valid Indian license is enabled across states and territories of Australia, including New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland, for a limited period. Although English language licenses are generally accepted, an IDP reduces the chances of running into less accommodating authorities.

4. Germany

An Indian in Germany may drive for a six-month period; however, translation of the Indian permit into German is mandatory. Upon the expiration of this six-month period, conversion for a local license needs to be done.

5. The United Arab Emirates (UAE)

UAE allows an international driving permit holder to drive on their Indian license for rental purposes. In case of permanent residents, they must convert their license to the local one.

6. South Africa

With your Indian license in South Africa, provided that it is translated in English and has a photograph and signature, you may drive. If this is not the case, an IDP would be needed.

7. Switzerland

In Switzerland, Indian tourists can drive for up to one year on a valid license. However, non-English licenses should be accompanied by an IDP.
