THIS Country Stands Alone in Food Self-Sufficiency, Says Study- Not China or Japan

Country with food self-sufficiency: As the world grapples with issues such as social injustice, poverty, climate change, and increasing food shortages, a surprising study has come out. This discovery is that there is only one country in the world that is capable of producing all the food it needs for its own people without relying on imports. This shocking truth was revealed in a study published in the journal ‘Nature Food’ and highlighted by ‘Science Focus’.

Country with food self-sufficiency: Guyana

Of the 186 countries studied, only Guyana is able to achieve self-sufficiency in all seven major food items. The study shows that they are self-sufficient in fruits, vegetables, dairy products, fish, meat, and staple foods. Guyana’s rare achievement is also noteworthy at a time when experts are assessing that the global food chain is deteriorating. There is a situation where shocks such as trade wars, climate change, and epidemics can seriously affect any country.

Guyana can survive every possible crisis

But Guyana stands out as a country that is capable of surviving such crises. Even countries like Vietnam and China are self-sufficient in only six out of seven food categories. But Guyana is self-sufficient in seven out of seven. The study also says that it is shocking that less than half of the countries included in this study are able to produce enough plant-based proteins, and only 25 percent of the countries can meet the demand for vegetables for their growing populations.

Meanwhile, the study also points out that European and South American countries are generally doing well and are approaching “self-sufficiency.” On the other hand, the small island states of the Arabian Peninsula and other low-income countries are dependent on imported food. Countries like the UAE, Iraq, Qatar, Yemen and Afghanistan are unable to produce enough in any food category.

“Low self-sufficiency in food production is not inherently a bad thing. There are valid reasons why a country cannot produce most of its food,” said Dr. Jonas Stell told BBC Science Focus. “However, low self-sufficiency can limit a country’s ability to respond to global food supply shocks such as droughts, wars and export bans,” Stell added.
