Chinmayi About Ramayana: “Even a Rapist Can Use God’s Name”

Chinmayi About Ramayana: “Even a Rapist Can Use God’s Name”

Chinmayi About Ramayana: Chinmayi Sripada, a singer, publicly defended Ranbir Kapoor’s choice to play Lord Rama in the Ramayana. Nearly 15 years after actor Ranbir Kapoor remarked on eating beef, the old statement has resurfaced on X (formerly Twitter), sparking fresh debate. Many users began questioning the decision to cast him as Lord Ram in the upcoming film Ramayana. The controversy intensified after a photo from the film’s set, featuring Ranbir Kapoor as Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita, went viral. One user commented, “Beef eater will be playing the role of Bhagavan Ram now! What’s wrong with Bollywood?” The remark quickly gained traction, drawing strong reactions online.

In response, singer Chinmayi Sripada addressed the criticism through a series of tweets. Reacting to the viral post, she wrote, “A babaji who uses the name of God can be a rapist and he can keep getting parole to get votes in bhakt India – however, what someone eats is a big problem.” When another user questioned her stance, asking, “How can one bad thing justify another bad thing?”, Chinmayi replied sharply, “Nice. So someone playing a ROLE is the same ‘bad’ as a rapist campaigning for votes amongst you. You deserve to have Ram Rahim as your local MP and visit your house personally.” Her comments added a new layer to the ongoing debate surrounding the film’s casting and the larger issue of selective outrage.

Ranbir’s Food and Films Controversy:

Ranbir Kapoor made the controversial comment in 2011 while promoting his film Rockstar. At the time, he said, “A lot of Peshawari food has come with my family because they are from Peshawar. I love meat, pepper, and mutton. Yes, I love meat a lot.” In the upcoming Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ranbir will portray Lord Ram. The film also stars Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana. The makers plan to release Part 1 on Diwali 2026, followed by Part 2 in 2027.

The film Ramayana brings to life the cosmic conflict between light and darkness, drawing inspiration from ancient Indian mythology. Despite its spiritual Indian roots, the movie aims for global appeal, with music composed by Oscar winners Hans Zimmer and AR Rahman. Production design teams that contributed to major Hollywood films like Captain America and Dune are leading the film’s visual development. Namit Malhotra is producing the project.
