Social media users labeled his behavior as “rude” and “arrogant,” and attributed it to industry nepotism. As a result, the internet harshly criticized Surya shortly after his debut.

Vijay Sethupathi addressed the criticism by stating that his son’s actions were unintentional. He apologized to everyone who felt offended by Surya’s behavior and clarified that his son may not have done it deliberately. In Phoenix, a boxing drama directed by renowned stunt choreographer Anl Arasu, Surya plays a teenage fighter who takes on a powerful opponent.
