Betting App Scandal: ED Probes 29 Celebrities Including Vijay Deverakonda

Betting App Scandal: The Enforcement Directorate has cracked a case with respect to the promotions done by 29 film personalities, YouTubers, and influencers on banned betting applications by setting up a serious probe against them. The probe is in consequence of an FIR lodged by Cyberabad Police. Catching the likes of popular actors such as Vijay Deverakonda, Rana Daggubati, Manchu Lakshmi, Prakash Raj, Nidhi Agarwal, Ananya Nagalla, and Sreemukhi.

Amid Serious Allegations, PMLA Case Filed

PMLA has taken action against celebrities accepting big bucks to promote these illegal apps. And this latest development has caused quite an uproar because the platforms allegedly lure potential victims into their net through massive social media campaigns and also the aggressive marketing schemes with promotional videos. Many of these platforms are also said to drive people to debts and even suicide.

Telangana Police Registers FIR Against Celebrities and Influencers

The FIR has mentioned all kinds of people in it: from TV anchors to serial actors. And YouTubers to social media influencers. Some notable names to mention are Praneetha, YSRCP spokesperson Shyamala, Varshini Soundararajan, Siri Hanumanthu, Vasanthi Krishnan, Shobha Shetty, Amrutha Choudhary, and numerous others.

The case has been filed under various legal provisions, including sections of the Telangana Gaming Act. The IT Act (2000 and 2008); and sections 318(4), 112, and 49 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

A Gamble with High Stakes and Social Implications

Stars are said to promote betting apps for handsome commissions, drawing a lot of unsuspecting users into financial troubles. Reportedly, many have drained the last of their life savings and gone to the extreme of ending their lives due to crushing debts linked to these platforms.
