The Crime and Court Ruling
Taeil, whose real name is Moon Tae-il, was convicted alongside his two co-defendants, Lee and Hong. They admitted to taking turns assaulting their victim, a Chinese tourist, in Itaewon, Seoul, after meeting her at a bar. The victim became heavily intoxicated, and the trio took her to Lee’s house, where the assault took place.
The Seoul Central District Court described the crime as “extremely grave” but reduced the sentence to just half of what prosecutors had requested, citing the defendants as first-time offenders. The three men were ordered to complete 40 hours of a treatment program for perpetrators of sexual violence.
The case falls under special quasi-rape laws in South Korea, which apply when the victim is unable to resist, often due to intoxication or unconsciousness. The court highlighted the psychological distress caused to the victim, who was a foreign tourist in an unfamiliar environment.
Taeil left NCT in August 2023, shortly after allegations surfaced. At the time, the details of the crime were not public. His departure was confirmed by SM Entertainment, which stated that it was no longer feasible for Taeil to continue with group activities given the serious nature of the allegations.
Taeil’s case has sent shockwaves through the K-pop world, with many fans expressing disbelief. The NCT group, known for its global success and experimental music, will now continue without one of its founding members.
