Current studies showed that indeed copper has some sanitation activity. In a research published in the Journal of Health, Population and Nutrition in 2012 it was stated that ”water has been proved 16 hours of storage within copper pots for reducing harmful bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella&ampquot. This copper especially works in places like where the water contamination is a problem.

Yet there is no chemical pollutant, heavy metals or pesticides in copper vessels, so they might be biologically effective. But simply ineffective compared to modern filtration systems referred to for an urban household.

Traditional Wisdom for the Purpose

Ayurveda has another beneficial practice drinking copper or Tamra Jal particularly as it known in Ayurvedic names. It is believed to control the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), digestion, and boost one’s immunity. This passed down from generation to generation was the ancient practice of holding one’s natural way toward good health before bottled water and filtering units became that popular.

For those who would like to use a copper vessel:

– Do not store acidic liquids (like lemon water) as this would react with copper.

– Do not take it on a regular basis as excessive intake of copper can be harmful.
