Jalebi and samosa are the favorite foods of many. Not only these two, fried and sugary foods cause serious health problems like heart disease and obesity. We must know the calories of any food we eat.
100 grams of jalebi contains about 366 calories, mainly from refined flour, sugar and oil, says dietician Dr. Archana Batra. One samosa contains 308 calories. This increases the risk of heart disease and obesity.
Since samosa and jalebi contain high amounts of trans fats and refined sugar, cardiologists around the world state that they can cause heart diseases.
Studies show that trans fats increase low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Meanwhile, it lowers high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and reduces ‘good cholesterol’, which helps remove plaque from the arteries. This imbalance accelerates the process that causes atherosclerosis. Where cholesterol and other substances build up on the walls of the arteries, causing them to narrow and harden. This increases the risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack and stroke.
The refined flour (maida) used in samosas is a carbohydrate. It increases blood glucose levels and increases metabolic risks.
Jalebis are high in sugar. And that is equally harmful. Consuming such high amounts of sugar causes a rapid increase in blood glucose and insulin. This leads to insulin resistance over time.
Calories are what the body uses for its energy needs. Heart rate, breathing, and other chemical reactions in the body require a small amount of calories. Activities that require repetitive use of large muscles in the body, such as walking, running, jumping, and swimming, require more calories. Excess calories in the body gradually lead to obesity and diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.
