Kamal Haasan to Rajya Sabha: Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) leader and actor Kamal Haasan will take oath as a Rajya Sabha member on July 25, the party officially announced. The DMK nominated Kamal Haasan to the Upper House as part of the alliance agreement reached during the Lok Sabha elections. He was recently elected unopposed. In this context, the party headquarters confirmed the date for his swearing-in ceremony in the Rajya Sabha.

Kamal Haasan founded the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party in Madurai on February 21, 2018. Since its inception, the party has struggled to make a significant impact in elections. Although MNM contested the 2019 general elections, it fell short of expectations, securing a vote share of 3.72 percent. The party saw considerable voter turnout in urban centers like Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai. However, in rural areas, most of its candidates lost their deposits.

Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) contested the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections but failed to win a single seat. Kamal Haasan, who contested from Coimbatore, lost to BJP candidate Vanathi Srinivasan by a margin of 1,728 votes. In the 2022 urban local body elections, the party contested all 140 seats but failed to secure any.

During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, MNM extended its support to the INDIA bloc. Tamil media reported that MNM and DMK reached an agreement at the time. As part of the deal, DMK offered Kamal Haasan the choice of either contesting the Lok Sabha elections or entering the Rajya Sabha. According to reports, Kamal Haasan opted for a seat in the Rajya Sabha.
