A hundred years after his birth, Guru Dutt legacy still commands awe. To mark the legendary filmmaker’s centenary, Ultra Media and Entertainment is launching a nationwide retrospective of his classics. From Pyaasa to Kaagaz Ke Phool, his timeless films will screen from August 8 to 10 in over 25 cities and up to 500 theatres across India. The event is supported by NFDC–NFAI under the National Film Heritage Mission.
The retrospective features digitally restored 4K versions of Pyaasa, Aar Paar, Mr & Mrs 55, Baaz, Kaagaz Ke Phool, and Chaudhvin Ka Chand. The Mumbai leg kicks off with a grand screening of Pyaasa on August 6, preceded by a round-table discussion featuring film industry stalwarts. Organizers promise not just nostalgia, but a rare chance to experience Dutt’s artistry in stunning new clarity.
Guru Dutt’s granddaughter Gouri Dutt welcomes the tribute with emotion and pride. “His stories were always original, never formula. This gives young audiences a real taste of cinematic courage,” she says. She also offers glimpses of the man behind the camera a strict yet loving father, a workaholic, and an animal lover. “He never stopped working hard, no matter success or failure.”
Cities like Kolkata and Mangaluru will host parallel events including critical discussions, exhibitions, and academic talks on Dutt’s influence. FTII is offering a film appreciation course focused entirely on his music, while the restored films themselves serve as educational archives of Indian cinematic language.
