Shravan Second Somwar 2025: Rituals, Timings, And Spiritual Significance

The second Somwar (i.e.: Monday) of the holy month of Shravan or Sawan is approaching! Devotees of Lord Shiva must be gearing up in anticipation of this great day and month of peace and devotion. This year (2025), the second Somwaar of Shravan will fall on Monday, 21 July, and will definitely be a great day. The Shravan Somwaar is uniquely special to Hindu culture – there is something to be said about this day and that worshiping Lord Shiva brings blessings, peace, and the fulfilment of wishes.


 

When is Shravan Second Somwar?
The second somwaar of Shravan will be during the auspicious day of 21 July 2025. On this day, special prayers, rituals and puja will be conducted during the auspicious day. Each day has its special “Shubh Muhurats” or auspicious time that are especially good for puja. Most people will try to pray or perform rituals during this time because it is the most auspicious.


 

Brahma Muhurat: 4:14 AM to 4:55 AM (early morning)

Pratah Sandhya: 4:35 AM to 5:36 AM

Sarvartha Siddhi Yog: All day

Devotees will try to perform their prayers and rituals during these times so as to receive maximum blessings!

 

Why is Shravan Somwar Important?
The month of Shravan and Mondays (Somwars) in particular are recognized as the most propitious time to worship Lord Shiva. It is believed that by performing a fasting and worshiping Shiva on a Shravan Somwar, barriers are removed and peace and prosperity can be achieved. For unmarried women, this day is especially meaningful in order to pray for a good husband and a happy married life.

Understanding why Shravan Somwar Vrat (fast) is observed is a good place to start. According to scripture, following the great churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), Lord Shiva drank the poison that emerged from the ocean and caused destruction to save the world. This is one of the many ways devotees show respect to Lord Shiva, such as offering water and other pure items of worship.

 

What Are the Rituals on Shravan Second Somwar?
As with any other festival or worship of a deity in Hinduism, devotees typically arise early on the day of Shravan Somwar and take a bath, while some change into clean (or in many cases white) clothes to signify purity. The rituals of on the day of Shravan Somwar include:

Offering Gangajal (holy water), milk, honey, and Bilva leaf to the Shiva Lingam.
Chanting the effective mantras, such as “Om Namah Shivaya” as many as 108 times or recite the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra.
Fasting from sunrise until sunset, and sometimes consuming only fruits and milk; and
Visting Shiva temples for evening aarti (light worship) and abhishekam (bathing of the deity)

When performing an abhishekam, a Shiva Lingam is bathed in holy water, milk, honey, curds and other sacred substances, usually to the chanting of Vedic mantras, while white flowers and fresh fruits are offered in a peaceful and holy environment.

Many people spend time meditating and praying to build a connection to Lord Shiva spiritually on that day.

When a follower performs the rituals and observes a fast on Shravan Somwar the follower is rewarded with growth spiritually, mental peace and good health. It is believed that Lord Shiva blesses a follower with happiness, success, and protection from enemies or negative forces.

After performing spiritual rituals and taking time from our busy lives we can often feel calmer and have a deeper sense of cultural and religious identity and esteem.

In essence, the Second Shravan Somwar is on 21 July 2025 and will be a day of devotion, following tradition and spirituality. By performing the rituals and prayer to Lord Shiva the devotee is honouring Lord Shiva and will receive blessings for a happy and prosperous life. Whether its fasting, visiting the temple or simply praying from the home, a sacred day like this affords many the opportunity for peace and divine grace.
