Kamika Ekadashi is one of the most spiritually significant days for followers of Lord Vishnu. It is recognized on the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the holy month of Sawan / Shravan. Kamika Ekadashi falls on July 21, 2025 this year.
This joyous day is believed to bring about a variety of benefits to the worshippers who commemorate it. Kamika Ekadashi is thought to wash away sins, bring fulfillment of wishes, give blessings from Lord Vishnu, and take steps toward moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death). Kamika Ekadashi Vrat fasting is not only a food abstention; it is a holistic spiritual discipline that includes devotion, cleanliness, and prayers.
Rituals and Observations for Kamika Ekadashi Vrat
On the early morning of the day, worshippers wake up early, take a holy bath, purify themselves, and create a peaceful, clean space for puja (worship). Worship is done to Lord Vishnu with tulsi leaves, flowers, incense, and lamps; chanting any Vishnu mantras, reading holy scriptures like the Vishnu Sahasranama, and meditating can also be done.
Reasons You Should Observe It
It is believed that those who observe the Kamika Ekadashi fast with love in their heart, bring forth peace, prosperity, and protection from negative energies. It´s that firm reminder to live a life in discipline and humility while keeping devotion close to the heart.
Part of the observance is reading or listening to the Vrat Katha (spiritual story of the day) as it aids the devotee from fully engaging and gravitating towards the more esoteric nature of the vrat’s significance.
In summary, Kamika Ekadashi is the opportunity to spiritually reset and strengthen your connection to the divine.
For devotees who chose to eat, they will eat only satvik food (pure vegetarian food, free of garlic or onions). Many worshippers would go on a complete fast, and there are two common types of fasting on Kamika Ekadashi:
- Nirjala Vrat – This is a complete fast, where devotees will not eat or drink anything for the whole day.
- Phalahar Vrat – This type of fast is better suited for those who want their full day without grains or cooked food, but may use fruits, milk, and water.
Spiritual importance
Kamika Ekadashi has spiritual importance. According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, observing a fast on this day is equivalent to performing a thousand yajnas (ritual sacrifices) or donating a thousand cows to the needy — which are great actions of merit in Hindu thought.
It is said that Lord Krishna told Yudhishthira, the eldest of the Pandavas, about the glory of Kamika Ekadashi and that referring to this fast, that it atones for all sins, while deeply pleasing Lord Vishnu. An observance of this vrat with full faith and discipline, helps cleanse the heart, steadies the mind, and invites blessings.
