How Likely Is It to Die While Giving Birth

Die While Giving Birth: Childbirth is often seen as a delightful and heavenly experience,  but for many women, it still carries great health risks. While medicine has made labor and delivery safer than ever, maternal mortality is still considered a serious issue, especially in several parts of the world (under-developed nations).

Global Maternal Mortality Rates

According to the WHO, around 3 lakh women died from health issues related to pregnancy and childbirth in 2020. The global maternal mortality ratio  is estimated at 223 deaths per 100,000 live births. However, these numbers vary depending on the location.

In low-income nations, the risk is way more,  especially in  Africa and several  parts of South Asia.
In high-income countries, such pregnancy-related deaths are rare, but not zero. For example, the U.S. has a relatively high MMR for a developed nation.

What Causes Maternal Death?

The leading causes include:

  • Severe bleeding
  • High blood pressure Issues(like preeclampsia and eclampsia)
  • Several Infections
  • Complications from abortions

Many of these are preventable  with proper care and a skilled health professional during delivery.

Who Is Most at Risk?

  • Women in rural areas
  • Those without access to good healthcare support
  • Very young-aged mothers (<18) or older mothers (above 35)
  • Women with already existing health issues
So, how likely is it to die while giving birth?   the odds are very low;  but they’re not zero. Globally, differences in care and availability make childbirth riskier for millions of women.

Raising awareness, in pregnancy, and ensuring the best service and care can turn childbirth from a deadly  event into a safe beginning , for both mother and baby.
