Mosquito-Borne Diseases: What to Watch for in Rainy Season

Mosquito-Borne Diseases: The setting of rain is perfect for mosquito hiding and breeding. The stagnation of water in potholes, artificial containers, drains, and flowerpots acts as a breeding center for the mosquito egg, which in turn is responsible for an abrupt multiplication of the mosquito population, which again spawns a potential risk of mosquito-borne diseases, predominantly to the tropical parts like India.

Common Mosquito Diseases during the Monsoon

Dengue Fever
Dengue is caused by the ‘Aedes’ mosquito and presents with high fever associated with severe pains in joints, skin rashes, headache, and vomiting. Severe cases may lead to internal bleeding and death if untreated.

Malaria
Malaria transmission is made by the ‘Anopheles mosquito.’ Its symptoms include fever, chill, and body ache that occurs in cyclic episodes. Untreated malaria can lead to lethal complications.

Chikungunya
Another viral ailment brought by Aedes mosquitoes. Severe joint pain, fever, and occasionally rashes characterize Chikungunya. While it is infrequently fatal, the pain may linger for several weeks to months.

Japanese Encephalitis
Mostly found in the countryside, the viral infection of the central nervous system may be manifested by having a headache high fever, with tremors, and in some cases neurological damage.

Prevention Tips to Stay Safe

Remove Standing Water:
Every now and then, empty and clean buckets, plant trays, and coolers; otherwise, mosquitoes will breed.

Use Mosquito Nets and Repellents:
Sleep under nets and use mosquito repellent mostly during early morning and evening when the mosquitoes are up.

Wear Protective Clothing:
Highly covered clothing such as long sleeves, pants should be worn outdoors mostly in high-risk areas.

Install Screens:
Install netted screens in doors and windows for an entryway of mosquitoes.

While the monsoon is relieving from the sun’s heat, it also brings with it a lot of diseases, so people should be aware and preventive in this regard. With a little caution, good health can be ensured, so protect yourself and your family this rainy season.
