Accidentally Added Extra Salt? Here’s How To Save Your Curry

Everyone can relate to the situation in which a wonderful meal is prepared, and then one element is much too strong within that meal. Such are occasions when salt has been added too much; it is a pity to destroy the whole thing.

But one should not give up or start all over again. There are little tricks to ruthlessly remove all salt from a curry and restore its yummy taste.

1. Raw Potato Slices
They are great natural absorbents. Cut some slices of raw potato, let them flow under water, and peel them just before dropping those into the curry for almost 15–20 minutes simmering. The potato will absorb excess salt. Remove the slices before serving.

2. Flour Dough Balls
Prepare two or three little balls of the wheat flour dough (depending on how much curry you have) and drop them in. These dough balls will soak up any excess salt. Don’t forget to take them out before serving.

3. Fresh Cream
If you want a creamy texture, just add a spoon of fresh cream to curry. This will neutralize the salt and further enhance the creaminess. Fresh cream will be very useful in paneer or tomato-based gravies.

4. Boiled Potatoes
Rather than just having raw potato slices, a few boiled ones would also do. They are to be left in the curry, forming part of the dish. This method absorbs the extra salt and at the same time gives the impression that you have cooked a novel recipe for your party.

5. Curd (Yogurt)
Another good fix for salty food is curd. Put in one tablespoon of curd and cook for a few minutes. It brings down the salt content, while giving the curry a hint of tanginess and balanced flavor. Largely a go-to for Indian curries.

6. Milk
Milk works in the same way as yogurt. It helps to diminish the salty taste when a little milk is added, and enriches the texture of the curry. If you add more than enough, it might thin out the curry.

7. Onions
Onions make salty food lose salt as well. Cut one onion in half and put it into the curry while it is cooking. Take it out in five to ten minutes. For a better flavor, you can use fried onions instead, which give a smoky taste and blend well with the curry.

8. Vinegar and Sugar

A tablespoon of vinegar with a tablespoon of sugar added to your dish will help balance the flavors. The combination of vinegar’s sourness and sugar’s sweetness counteracts excess salt to create a dish with an enjoyable flavor profile.

When you add extra salt to your dish you should stay calm instead of worrying. These basic methods will assist you in rescuing both your culinary creation and the work you put into it.

Extra Tip:

As a preventive measure you should use your fingers to sprinkle salt from a spoon or container instead of direct pouring since this method provides better control of salt quantity for beginners in the kitchen.
