Inside Keanu Reeves’ Heavenly Turn: How His ‘Good Fortune’ with Aziz Ansari Came to Life

Reeves Shines in a New Comic Role

Keanu Reeves returns to comedy in Good Fortune, Aziz Ansari’s feature directorial debut. The film casts Reeves as Gabriel, a well-meaning but awkward guardian angel looking for greater purpose. His latest mission? Guiding a struggling gig worker, played by Ansari, and a wealthy tech investor, played by Seth Rogen. Reeves, known for action roles like John Wick, leans into comedic chaos in this celestial comedy from Lionsgate.

On-Set Injury Didn’t Stop Keanu Reeves

Reeves sustained a fractured kneecap early in filming after slipping on a rug during a cold plunge sequence. Despite the injury, he pushed through the majority of his scenes, postponing only a dance number. Reeves later joked about the mishap on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, saying his kneecap “cracked like a potato chip.” His perseverance impressed the cast and crew, further highlighting his dedication to the role.

Ansari’s Bond with Reeves Built Off-Camera

Aziz Ansari, who writes, directs, and stars in the film, admitted he was initially nervous directing a global star like Reeves. To break the ice, he invited Reeves to his home for Indian food. That gesture helped forge a working relationship grounded in mutual respect. Ansari, whose previous film Being Mortal was shelved in 2022, called Good Fortune a new beginning. The film also features Sandra Oh as another angel and Keke Palmer in a key supporting role.

From Film Festival to Theaters

Good Fortune is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025. Lionsgate will release the film in theaters nationwide on October 17. The story explores class divides, modern struggles, and identity through a high-concept body swap, blending heavenly mishaps with real-world satire. Inspired by It’s a Wonderful Life, Ansari aims to revive theatrical comedy with a story that bridges generations and genres. The production involved companies like Garam Films, Keep Your Head, and Yang Pictures.
