Kamal Haasan:Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) leader and actor Kamal Haasan took oath as a Rajya Sabha member and received warm wishes from fans across the country. Kamal proudly showcased his love for his mother tongue by taking the oath in Tamil. Deputy Chairperson Hari Vamsi and five other members from Tamil Nadu also took oath alongside him. Kamal expressed his commitment and promised to fulfill his duty as an Indian.
The DMK allotted the Rajya Sabha seat to Kamal Haasan as part of an arrangement made during the most recent Lok Sabha elections. Kamal secured the position unopposed. On February 21, 2018, Kamal founded the Makkal Needhi Maiam party in Madurai. Since its inception, the party has struggled to make a major electoral impact. Although MNM contested the 2019 general elections, it failed to meet expectations. Still, the party garnered a 3.72 percent vote share, with strong support from Madurai, Coimbatore, and Chennai.
Tamil Nadu Assembly Seats:
A candidate must receive at least 34 votes in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly in order to be elected to the Rajya Sabha. The alliance was well-positioned to win four seats with 158 MLAs from the DMK-led INDIA bloc (DMK-133, Congress-17, VCK-4, CPI-2, and CPM-2). MNM, meanwhile, had thrown its full support behind the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu and refrained from running in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
