Hariyali Teej Vrat: What To Do If You Accidentally Break Your Fast

Hariyali Teej Vrat: What To Do If You Accidentally Break Your Fast

Hariyali Teej is a sacred festival in Hinduism that is celebrated primarily by married women throughout India. On this day, women observe a great level of difficulty by undertaking a nirjala vrat or a fast without food or water for their husband’s long life and happiness. Unmarried girls also keep a fast and pray for a good future husband.

Date and Shubh Mahurat
On Sunday, July 27, 2025 Hariyali Teej will be celebrated. According to Drik Panchang, Tritiya Tithi begins at 10:41 PM on July 26 to 10:41 PM on July 27. The shubh mahurat for puja is from 4:31 AM to 5:15 AM and again from 6:45 PM to 7:30 PM.

The fast can be physically demanding. Sometimes due to weakness or even by mistake women can accidentally break the fast and take some water or food. If that happens do not feel guilty. Hindu culture and traditions offer options for remedies to nullify the mistake and also to avoid vrat dosh (the negative effects of breaking a fast).

Three easy remedies if you break you Hariyali Teej fast accidentally:

1. Ask for Forgiveness with Full Devotion
Please offer your prayers to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with full faith and devotion. Say sorry and vow to the Gods that you are sorry for your mistake and you will not do it again, then continue your prayers with complete sincerity. Do the whole puja process and break your fast properly the next day.

2. Form Idols from Clay and Worship Them
Prepare small, clay idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati using clean soil or clay. Offer them panchamrit (milk, honey, curd, sugar, and ghee). Dress and adorn the idols after you bathe them. Offer fruit, sweets, and some rice, ask for forgiveness from your heart and complete the fast that night with rites.

3. Donate to Seven Married Women
Donations help reduce the bad results of breaking the fast. Donate suhag items (bangles, sindoor, bindis, combs) to seven married women. Ask for their blessings after you finish giving the suhag items. While donating, worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati from your clean heart.

These steps help in removing vrat dosh; what is important is making a pure genuine attempt to worship and offer. Follow the remedies with all your sincerity. Lord Shiva and Parvati are known for forgiving their true devotees. Maintain faith in your heart and be positive throughout the festival.
