What Happens When You Eat Too Much Salt? What Are Daily Limits

Salt makes food delicious and lively. But how much is too much? Salt is a part of the diet of most people in the world today and hardly anyone gives it that second thought. But here’s something for you: overeating salt can silently kill your health. What Happens When You Eat Too Much Salt? What Are Daily Limits.

When You Eat Too Much Salt:

Overconsumption of salt in the body causes water retention which then increases the volume of blood in the bloodstream causing pressure on the arteries. Over time, an increase in blood pressure forms hypertension which is one of the most important factors in heart disease, stroke, and kidney damage.

You might also feel bloated, puffy, or unusually thirsty after a salty meal. Long-term overconsumption can even affect your bones and brain, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and cognitive decline.

So how much salt is safe to consume?

As per the recommendations given by experts like World Health Organization (WHO) and other such institutions,

> 2,300 mg sodium per day (approximately 1 teaspoon of table salt) — but it’s better at 1,500 mg, even more if you’re hypertensive or more than 50.

Keep in mind that most of the salt you consume is not from a salt shaker; rather, it is hidden away in processed foods, snacks, canned goods, and bread. So read those labels carefully.

Slight Changes Generate Momentum

If you’re looking to limit yourself, start small. Try to swap packaged snacks for fresh fruit or flavor through herbs and lemons, and cook more at home. Your palate will adjust, and thank you will your heart.
