Expectations around Coolie, starring Rajinikanth and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, are skyrocketing ahead of its August 14 release. With a star-studded cast including Nagarjuna, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, and Aamir Khan, the action drama has already become one of the most anticipated South Indian films of the year.
The teaser, packed with vintage references and massy visuals, has sparked a new debate: is Coolie inspired by the Bollywood classic Deewaar?
According to strong industry buzz, Coolie follows a storyline where a daily wage laborer takes on a corrupt syndicate exploiting coolies. The character then rises to power, becoming a feared don, only to later be haunted by his dark past.
This arc bears striking similarities to the 1975 Bollywood classic Deewaar, where Amitabh Bachchan’s character follows a nearly identical rise. Fans and film analysts note the emotional weight, anti-hero tone, and social undertones that mirror Deewaar’s iconic plot.
Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has addressed the speculation. He clarified that Coolie is not a remake or reboot of Deewaar. Instead, he explained that the film includes nostalgic callbacks to Rajinikanth’s older works particularly Uzhaipaali, Thalapathi, and Thee, which themselves carried shades of similar themes.
Lokesh described these references as intentional Easter eggs and said they were crafted to honor Rajinikanth’s legacy, not to mimic other films.

This isn’t the first time Lokesh has drawn inspiration from older films. His past projects like Master and Leo included visual and thematic nods to Bollywood and Hollywood cinema.
Despite the comparisons, the Coolie team insists the film offers a fresh narrative packed with new-age treatment and scale. With high expectations and nostalgic excitement building, fans are now eager to see if Coolie will stand on its own or walk the path Deewaar paved decades ago.
