Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will take care of 22 children who lost their parents or breadwinners in the border conflict in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. Rahul Gandhi will take care of the education of these children, orphaned by the Pakistani shelling, till they complete their graduation, The Indian Express reported, quoting Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Tariq Hameed Kara.
He said that the first tranche of assistance will be distributed this week itself to ensure that the students continue their studies without interruption. When Rahul Gandhi visited Poonch in May, he had asked local party leaders to prepare a list of the affected children. After a survey, the government has finalised the names of the children after checking the records.
During his visit, Rahul Gandhi also visited Christ Public School to meet the classmates of 12-year-old twins Urba Fatima and Zain Ali, who died in the shelling.
I am proud of you. I am deeply saddened that you have lost your friends. You may be feeling a little scared and in danger right now, but don’t worry. Everything will be normal. Your response to this is to study well, play well and make lots of friends in school,” Rahul Gandhi told the children.
Several civilians, including children, were injured in Poonch, one of the worst-hit areas by Pakistani shelling. A small boy named Vihan Bhargav lost his life after being stabbed while trying to escape with his family when the violence intensified.
India launched Operation Sindoor after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 this year, which claimed the lives of 26 people. In retaliation, India targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan, killing over 100 terrorists. After the operation on May 7, India and Pakistan reached a ceasefire agreement on May 10.
