33 Lead Roles, 23 Years: How Nithiin is Maintaining Consistency in Inconsistency?

33 Lead Roles, 23 Years: How Nithiin is Maintaining Consistency in Inconsistency?

Nithiin, the meticulous Telugu actor, has spent 23 years in the industry with more than 33 lead roles under his belt. That may look like a worthy feat on paper, but a closer examination uncovers an interesting trend, a career marked less by success and more by survival.

33 Lead Roles, 23 Years

Let’s get numbers. Out of 33 films, only five are considered blockbusters; Jayam (2002), Dil (2004), Ishq (2012), Gunde Jaari Gallanthayyinde (2013), and A Aa (2016). Add one superhit (Bheesma, 2020) and a modest hit (Sye, 2003), and we’re left with just seven successful outings in over two decades. That’s roughly one hit every three years, and just two hits in the last twelve. For an actor who frequently cast opposite leading ladies and supported by his own production company, the dividends are surprisingly disappointing.

Others claim Nithiin was born with a silver, or rather, Uranium spoon, considering the family’s wealth and industry support. His home banner, Shresht Movies, grants him creative freedom, but it could also be his greatest obstacle. Lacking outside creative competition and an entourage of yes-men, Nithiin appears stuck in a cycle of riskless, middle-of-the-road films that don’t aim to fly but merely break even.

Why is his career going down?

It’s not that he is lacking in screen presence or acting skills, he has performed well in movies like Ishq and Gunde Jaari, partly due to good co-stars and chemistry (do recall Nithya Menen?). But the problem appears to be in script choice and aspirations. Ever since post-A Aa, which was a game-changer, the films have largely lacked originality, spark, or even a try at makeover.

While peers have grown by embracing risk (take the case of Nani, Vijay Deverakonda, or Siddhu Jonnalagadda), Nithiin seems to be playing it too safe, maybe too safe. Consequently, the industry has begun perceiving him as the actor who’s always present, but never quite leaves his mark.

It’s not too late, however. With the proper team, improved script judgment, and a willingness to experiment beyond his comfort zone, Nithiin could rechart his course. In the meantime, however, his career is a case study in how inconsistency can be consistent enough to keep you afloat in Tollywood.
