A woman from South Mumbai recounted her odd experience with her cook on X (formerly Twitter). As a lawyer, she reported her cook charges Rs 18,000 per house, and only works for half an hour per house. Her cook goes to 10-12 houses everyday, with the bonus of free food and tea at every house.
The woman explained the cook’s high price is not unusual for expensive areas like South Mumbai. He is charging Rs 2,500 per day for a family of 12. Which is perfectly reasonable in these areas. She asserted that this was her real-life experience and not a joke or exaggeration.
The internet found the post hilarious and unbelievable. One user said sarcastically if the cook drops off boiling water in a half hour. Another South Mumbai resident said most cooks charge Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 for an hour of work, once a day.
Quite a few people asked how a cook could possibly put food into as many houses as the cook did in 30 minutes. As one user said, is she using AI to cook, or is she just a “MasterChef”? Another user even said the cook should start a business about cooking at scale. Her service would be “Shark tank” material.
Although life in big cities can be very busy, many people hire cooks for convenience, but it costs a lot more money in a Mumbai than in most big cities. The anecdote by the lawyer illustrated how high the get daily service fees, especially when the service is located in elite neighbourhoods.
