Kerala CM Slams Jury Over Kerala Story National Award: Insult to Indian cinema?

Kerala CM Slams Jury: The 2025 National Film Awards have landed in controversy, especially after The Kerala Story bagged a major honor. While the film was celebrated by some for its bold narrative, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has fiercely criticized the jury, calling the decision a dangerous precedent that undermines both artistic integrity and secular values.

CM’s Statement: A Sharp Reproach

In a tweet that quickly went viral, the Kerala CM stated:

“By honouring a film that spreads blatant misinformation with the clear intent of tarnishing Kerala’s image. And sowing seeds of communal hatred, the jury of the #NationalFilmAwards has lent legitimacy to a narrative rooted in the divisive ideology of the Sangh Parivar.

Kerala, a land that has always stood as a beacon of harmony and resistance against communal forces. It has been gravely insulted by this decision. It is not just Malayalis, but everyone who believes in democracy, must raise their voice in defence of truth and the constitutional values we hold dear.”

This bold reaction underscores his belief that the film does not deserve national recognition. Especially for portraying what he sees as a distorted and politically motivated narrative.

Divided Voices in Cinema

The film industry and public remain divided. While right-wing supporters and the film’s creators see the award as a victory for freedom of expression. Critics argue it sends a worrying message about normalizing propaganda in cinema. Some filmmakers have echoed the CM’s views, raising questions about the politicization of national recognition.

Debate Far from Over

The controversy surrounding The Kerala Story shows how awards in India are increasingly intersecting with ideology, identity, and politics. Whether seen as a bold artistic work or a divisive tool, the film’s recognition has undeniably ignited a larger conversation about truth, representation, and the role of cinema in shaping national narratives.
