FASTag Annual Pass vs Per-Trip Fee: What’s Better?

FASTag Annual Pass vs Per-Trip Fee: What’s Better?

FASTag Annual Pass: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced a new annual FASTag pass for Indian daily commuters, set to go on sale on August 15, 2025. The ministry will continue the existing FASTag system and will not make the Annual Pass mandatory. Users who choose not to buy the Annual Pass can still use FASTag for regular transactions, paying tolls based on the standard user charges at fee plazas.

Here are several advantages of choosing the Annual Pass over the current per-trip fee system.

Key Points to Understand:

⦿ The Annual Pass allows private vehicles, jeeps, and vans to travel freely for a year or 200 trips, whichever comes first, at authorized National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) fee plazas.

⦿ NHAI will activate the Annual Pass starting August 15 through its website and the Rajmargyatra mobile app.
⦿ Normally, the Annual Pass will be enabled on the registered FASTag in two hours after the ₹3,000 payment for the base year 2025–2026 is verified.
⦿ You can activate the Annual Pass on your existing FASTag if it meets conditions like being on the windshield and having a non-blacklisted car number. This removes the need to buy a new FASTag.

⦿ Annual Pass remains valid for 200 trips or one year from activation, whichever comes first. After that, it instantly reverts to the regular FASTag.

Important Points about Annual Pass:
⦿ However, users must note that the Annual Pass applies only to fee plazas on National Highways (NH) and National Expressways (NE). If they plan to use fee plazas on State Highways (SH), which various state governments or local bodies operate, they may still need to pay additional tolls.

⦿ Additionally, only private non-commercial vehicles such as automobiles, jeeps, and vans are eligible for the Annual Pass, which requires verification through the VAHAN database. According to the Ministry, its usage in any commercial vehicle will result in its immediate and unannounced deactivation.
⦿ Authorities issue the pass only for the registered vehicle and do not allow transfers. They will deactivate it if used on another vehicle.
