Ropeway in Golconda Fort: Hyderabad will launch its first ropeway service to connect Golconda Fort and the Qutub Shahi Tombs. The two-kilometer ropeway will carry visitors between these heritage sites. Officials estimate the average fare per trip will range between ₹100 and ₹200.
Currently, 5,000 to 8,000 people visit the monuments daily, with weekend footfall crossing 10,000. The Hyderabad Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (HUMTA) confirmed that the project will follow the model of existing aerial transport systems in popular tourist destinations like Shimla, Dharamshala, and Manali. The Ropeway & Rapid Transport System Development Corporation (RTDC) operates those systems.
Development Tenders:
B Jeevan Babu, Managing Director of HUMTA, confirmed that the agency has already invited bids to prepare a detailed project report, conduct a feasibility study, and finalize the budget for the bidirectional ropeway. He added, “The city ropeway will feature modern cable cars that can carry six passengers at a time, offering panoramic views of the historic monuments and the surrounding landscape.” Officials have set the tender submission deadline for August 8.
Officials also explained that the project will not only offer a unique experience but also reduce travel time between the two heritage sites. During peak hours, road travel currently takes 15 to 20 minutes, but the ropeway will shorten that to just 5 to 10 minutes. Authorities will set up two terminals, one at the Qutub Shahi Tombs complex and another near the entrance of the Golconda Fort.

Faced with challenges in road extension due to narrow street layouts, the authorities introduced this new method. Jeevan Babu stated that the project aims to ease parking issues and reduce vehicle traffic in the neighborhood, thereby improving the preservation of these historic sites. He also added that the construction will require large towers between the two heritage locations. The development will follow a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Initially, officials plan to operate two cable cars, but they may increase the number based on visitor demand and business viability. “Our main objective is to offer efficient transportation access to both domestic and international tourists. We will begin the ropeway construction as soon as the agency submits its feasibility report,” the Managing Director informed the media. In 2024, the Center announced plans for a ropeway tourism project at Bhuvanagiri Fort in Telangana. They are executing the project with a budget exceeding Rs 50 crore under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 program.
