A friend discovered South Korean actor Song Young-Kyu unconscious in a parked vehicle on Monday in Cheoin-gu, Yongin, just south of Seoul, and immediately alerted the police. He was 55. Authorities examined the scene, found no signs of foul play, and reported that they did not recover a suicide note. They have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of his death.
Song’s death comes less than two weeks after he was involved in a DUI case in the same city. Authorities revoked his license under South Korean law, and prosecutors referred his case without detention. The scandal had significant professional consequences, Song stepped down from ENA’s The Defects, SBS’s The Winning Try, and a stage production of Shakespeare in Love. Reports say he was deeply affected by the public backlash. According to Koreaboo, Song felt overwhelmed by “malicious articles and comments” surrounding the incident.
Song Young-Kyu began his career in 1994 with the children’s musical Wizard Mureul. He built a strong reputation across theater, television, and film. His breakout role as Chief Choi in the 2019 hit film Extreme Job earned him international acclaim. He also appeared in popular dramas and films including Hyena, Trick, Baseball Girl, and Stove League.
