Why Healthy-Looking People Are Suddenly Collapsing At The Gym

A growing number of healthy individuals collapsing in the gym is disturbing. But did you know that it is not the high intensity exercises you undertake that are the real enemy, it is an underlying issue that many of us sweep under the rug, and which often becomes a heart problem.

In an Instagram posted on August 1, Dr Alok Chopra, MD, MBBS, functional medicine expert and cardiologist, shared exactly why people under 40, are at increased risk of heart-related diseases.

Why are people now collapsing in their 30s and 40s during workouts?

According to the cardiologist, it’s not the treadmill causing these problems. Rather, he indicates, It is the metabolic dysfunction that has gone previously unidentified for years. “What you want to avoid is not exercise — it is recognising and addressing the silent risk factors before they become fatal.”

When sharing Dr. Chopra’s post, he added, “Fast track to a heart attack. It’s not the treadmills creating heart problems for under 40s, it’s the metabolic dysfunction.”

The real reason

Dr. Chopra points out every day we hear of young people (who we probably now know) who are having heart attacks on treadmills, or in extreme situations while doing high intensity training.

According to Dr Chopra, the real perpetrators are other issues that contribute to heart health declining, such as the following:

  1. Poor Metabolic Health
  2. Silent Insulin Resistance
  3. Chronic inflammation
  4. Stress Overload
  5. Poor Sleep and Recovery
  6. Nutrient Deficient Diets

Additionally, Dr Chopra states that while heart-related incidents oftentimes occur during higher intensity bouts of training; what happens on the treadmill is the symptom emerging. Not the cause. “If your body was a ticking time bomb; the workout triggers the ignition; the treadmill is not the enemy. The enemy is the ‘thing’ you are ignoring,” he stated.

So, what then do you do? Finding these basketballs is step one. In an Instagram post on July 22, Dr Naveen Bhamri, cardiologist, MD, DM shares there are two tests you need to do along with an ECG to know the true state of your heart: TMT and ECO cardiography. Find out about those two tests here.
