For those with a love of flavoursome and colourful food like I do, there is nothing like Indian food. Dishes like Rajma, Chhole, Shahi Paneer, Dal Makhani and Chicken curry are staples in most households. We often indulge in these meals with Pooris, Bhaturas, and Naans, but many of these so-called breads include Maida or all-purpose flour; something that could possibly be detrimental to our health.
Maida is refined and processed, meaning it is stripped of nutrients and fiber. Nutritionists warn that consumption of products containing Maida often leads to weight gain and regular consumption may be harmful to digestion and may lead to spikes in blood sugar levels which is not great for your health in the long term.
If you are trying to lose weight, I recommend that you refrain from, or cut down Maida consumption as you can simply substitute with Jowar flour. Jowar is made into soft, tasty rotis that is a high source of fiber which in turn is good for digestion and may assist in maintaining healthy weight.
Mumbai-based YouTuber Alpa Modi recently shared a simple Jowar roti recipe on her YouTube channel Something’s Cooking With Alpa. The great thing about Alpa’s recipe is that she incorporates gluten-free Jowar flour and once she adds in rice flour, it acts as a binding agent and allows for the roti to roll nicely. You can create a quick, healthy and easy meal from Jowar roti that can easily be incorporated into daily cooking.
Eating jowar rotis can offer a multitude of benefits! To begin with, jowar is high in fiber. Fiber can help you feel full longer and curb the risk of overeating. Fiber is also very beneficial for gut health and digestion. Jowar can contribute to weight control and support weight management in a healthy manner.
It also helps to regulate blood sugar, making it particularly helpful for diabetics. Finally, jowar rotis go well with just about any kind of curry or vegetable. And they taste so yummy! You can eat some more, without guilt.
Changing over from wheat to jowar is a small but significant change. You get great taste, texture and a ton of health benefits. The next time you make a naan or poori, try a jowar roti instead. Your body will be glad you did it!
