World Lizard Day 2025: Facts about lizards you probably didn’t know

World Lizard Day 2025: Every year on August 14, reptile aficionados celebrate World Lizard Day, which is an important occasion.  The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about the demise of numerous lizard species, both large and small, as a result of inadequate conservation and care. Let’s now understand five lesser-known lizard facts that you probably didn’t realize existed.

5 Facts about lizards:

1. Not all lizards have legs:

There are roughly a hundred different kinds of legless lizards! And a lot of these often slither through the earth and reside underground. Despite their similar appearance, they are distinguished from snakes by their long tails and tiny ear holes. Another distinction is that snakes may consume their entire food, whereas legless lizards primarily hunt tiny insects and bugs.

2. Lizards can swim:

The majority of lizards worldwide are also capable of swimming. The green basilisk lizard, which can even run on water, is one of them.  By maintaining their mouths and nostrils above the waterline to breathe, these lizards can survive underwater for a short time, though not forever. Marine iguanas are an exception, though, as they can stay underwater for up to twelve minutes.

3. Lizard’s Life Span (50 Years):

Although certain species can live up to 50 years, lizards typically only survive five to ten years. Their habitat has a significant impact on their longevity and age. If it doesn’t contract diseases or become a victim of poaching, the Komodo dragon, a lizard that resembles a dinosaur, can live for fifty years or even a bit longer.

4. Tail Detaching Ability:

When you find a lizard’s tail on the ground instead of the actual reptile, it’s not a coincidence. To assist them in scampering away from predators, many lizards can detach their tails. But there is a cost to this: lizards that automatize their tails have less social status and fewer mating opportunities.

5. Three Meals in a Year:

With only three meals a year, certain lizards, such as the Mexican bearded lizard, may readily survive. Their short tails may store a lot of fat, which they can use during long periods of starvation or the months of estivation; thus, they require a minimum amount of food. They can consume other lizards because they are carnivores.
