Independence Day 2025: Must-watch Patriotic Bollywood Movies

Independence Day 2025: Many Indians commemorate Independence Day by watching movies that honor our country’s history, bravery, and solidarity, in addition to participating in parades and flag raising. Over the years, Bollywood has produced a large number of these films. Love for the nation unites all of them, regardless of whether they are set in the past or the present.

Here are 5 films ideal for Independence Day viewing:

1. Swades (2004):

Shah Rukh Khan plays one of his favorite parts in Ashutosh Gowariker’s flick Swades. The narrative centers on Mohan Bhargava, a successful scientist employed by NASA in the United States. He reestablishes his connection to the area where he was raised when he returns to India in search of his childhood caretaker.

Mohan initially feels cut off from rural life. However, he chooses to take action after witnessing the peasants’ hardships due to a lack of electricity, inadequate education, and social divisions. The film’s theme of serving your country and going back to your roots is still relevant today.

2. Lagaan (2001):

Ashutosh Gowariker directs the historical drama Lagaan. The movie takes viewers to the late 1800s, when the British ruled India, and shows how heavy taxes (lagaan) burden poor farmers in a small central Indian village. A ruthless British officer challenges them to a cricket match. If they win, they will receive a three-year tax exemption; if they lose, they will have to pay triple the tax. The villagers, who have never played cricket before, follow the lead of a young man named Bhuvan (Aamir Khan) and accept the challenge. The film portrays solidarity, courage, and the fight against injustice.

3. Chak De India (2007):

Shah Rukh Khan portrays former Indian hockey captain Kabir Khan in Shimit Amin’s sports drama Chak De India. After false accusations of betraying his nation, Kabir returns to coach the Indian women’s hockey team.

Players from many states, each carrying unique cultural traits and personal struggles, form the team. Kabir faces his biggest challenge in uniting them into a cohesive unit. The film highlights discipline, teamwork, and pride in wearing the Indian jersey. The phrase Chak De India became a popular slogan of inspiration and patriotism.

4. Rang De Basanti (2006):

The film opens with a British filmmaker traveling to India to document freedom fighters such as Rajguru, Bhagat Singh, and Chandrashekhar Azad. She casts a group of lively university students from Delhi in the roles. At first, the students treat politics and history lightly. However, a personal tragedy inspires them with the bravery of the rebels they portray. They decide to confront corruption directly. The film has sparked an important youth movement in India.

5. Gandhi (1982):

Richard Attenborough directed the epic biographical drama Gandhi, which tells the life story of Mahatma Gandhi. The film avoids the conventions of a typical Bollywood movie. It chronicles Gandhi’s journey from a young South African lawyer to the leader of India’s nonviolent independence movement against British rule. The movie won several Oscars, including Best Picture, and audiences widely praise Ben Kingsley’s portrayal of Gandhi. Watching Gandhi takes viewers through the history of India’s freedom struggle and reminds them of the power of nonviolence and truth.
