Rajinikanth’s Coolie has set a record on its first day of release in theaters. According to the Times of India, it has registered a net collection of around Rs. 65 crore in India alone, making it the biggest opening in the history of Tamil cinema.
According to India Times, if the film is to become a hit, it will have to collect at least Rs 600 crore worldwide. There are reports in cinema circles that the film may have crossed Rs 150 crore on the first day of its release, including domestic and foreign markets.
If the film runs at this pace, it is expected to break the records of blockbuster films like Leo and 2.0. Meanwhile, Hrithik Roshan, Jr. NTR and Kiara Advani starrer War 2 has collected a net collection of Rs 52.5 crore on its first day, according to the Times of India.
Although this is a good start, it is worth noting that it is not equal to Coolie. Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie has collected Rs. 65 crores in India on its first day and around Rs. 150 crores worldwide on its first day. Actor Vijay-starrer Leo has collected Rs. 68 crores on its first day in India.
It was the biggest opening day of Tamil cinema on that day, grossing between Rs. 140-148 crores worldwide. When compared to Coolie and Leo, Coolie has garnered the biggest collection, surpassing Leo. It is said that the collection may increase further as the holidays are coming up.
