Independence Day Twins: Countries Celebrating Freedom on August 15

India is celebrating its 79th Independence Day today. Prime Minister Modi addressed the nation from the Red Fort in Delhi. A special feature of this year’s Independence Day celebrations is that India is celebrating the success of Operation Sindoor.

The stories of the sacrifices of the country’s heroes tell us how important independence is to Indians. August 15 is engraved in golden letters not only in India but also in the history of many countries of the world.

Many countries of the world gained independence along with India. That is why those countries also celebrate independence with great enthusiasm along with India. In both North and South Korea, August 15 is celebrated as Liberation Day.

This is the day when Korea was liberated from Japanese occupation after 35 years in 1945. Korea gained independence from Japan after Japan’s defeat in World War II. Although liberation brought a ray of hope, it also ushered in division.

A temporary agreement was reached between the Soviet Union and the United States for the Korean Peninsula. It was divided at the 38th parallel. Three years later, this political division became two separate parts.

This eventually led to the Korean War in 1950. However, despite being separated for many years, both countries celebrate August 15 as the moment they regained their land.

Britain had controlled Bahrain’s security and foreign affairs since the 19th century. But internal administration was in the hands of the Al-Khalifa royal family. Britain announced in 1968 that it would withdraw its military forces from the “Trucial States” (present-day United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain) in the Persian Gulf by 1971. Bahrain initially wanted to join the UAE, but changed its mind due to political differences. On August 14, 1971, Bahrain declared itself an independent state. On August 15, 1971, Britain relinquished control of the country. Bahrain thus became independent.

The Republic of the Congo, once part of French Equatorial Africa, gained independence from France on August 15, 1960. In the capital, Brazzaville, parades and concerts are held every year to celebrate Congolese National Day, bringing patriotism to life. This is not unlike the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which celebrates its independence from Belgium on June 30.

The independence of the Democratic Republic of the Congo from Belgium took effect on June 30, 1960. But the Republic of the Congo (its western neighbor) gained independence on August 15, 1960. This is why independence celebrations cause confusion between the two countries.
